Lesson Title:Drifting Continents Part 2

State Standards: GLEs/GSEs

National Standards:

Context of Lesson:

This is the second class of the 3rd section (Drifting Continents) of the Tectonics Unit Plan. This class will consists of two activities. The first activity will consist of the group presentations that were researched and planned in the previous class. The second activity will be centered on documenting the information learned in the last two classes into each student's Science Ring - The Earth tool.

Materials

Large cut outs of the Earth's continents.
Globe

Objectives:

The students will :
  • Describe and explain examples and non-examples of science concepts within a Team presentation format.. (about what topic?)
  • Answer questions from the audience in need of clarification.
  • Cite evidence and develop logical argument for science concepts.
  • Add data and corroborating evidence into their developing scientific model of the Earth.

Instruction:

Opening: (3 minutes)

Have these instructions written on board.
Meet into their jigsaw teams.
Gather and review each of the questions that you are responsible for.
Be prepared to share out to the class
SAY: Just remember, all you are doing today is sharing your information. Remember scientists always show politeness and respect by listening quietly while others are sharing.

Why not provide an overview of the day here? If students have to make cards based on their memory of the presentations, shouldn't they know that up front?

Engagement:

Activity 1 - Presentations. (30 minutes)
Begin presentations in this sequence of topics:
  1. Wegener's Theory of Continental Drift
  2. Evidence from Landforms
  3. Evidence from Fossils
  4. Evidence from Climate
  5. Scientists reject Wegener's Theory.
Have each team present their presentation without interruption.
After each team has finished presenting have the other teams ask their questions. Duplication of questions is allowed. Have student preface duplicate question with (I'm not sure I understand but could you tell me again ...... )
Teacher will have probing questions at the ready to stimulate discussion.

Activity 2 - Documenting new data into Science Ring - The Earth (15 minutes)
Say:
Very good job sharing this information. It went so well that I think we are ready to incorporate this new information into our Science Ring. Let's do it now.
Have each team come up to the class and write their summarizing sentences onto the board and have the rest of the class individually copy the information on correct index cards and insert it into their Science Ring.
After each team has completed summary task have each team copy their own summarizing sentences onto appropriate Science Ring index card.
Add to their Science Ring the fact that one very important way that scientist share their informations is through presentations and public discussions.

Closure:(2minutes)

Thank the class for a job well done. Ask if they accomplished the goal today, which was sharing and discussing scientific information. Tell them that they very much acted like scientist the last two days, especially the way that everyone worked together and the way you shared your knowledge in a respectful manner.
Homework ; Answer the section 3 review questions, to be handed in tomorrow.

My guess is that time will be an issue. Maybe each group could be responsible for creating a transparency of a suggested knowledge card that could be shown during the construction activity?

Assessment:

Formative: This whole lesson (2 classes) is one formative assessment opportunity for the teacher. All three activities allow the teacher to provide behavior specific positive reinforcement for good work and specific redirection for misunderstanding. Group interactions can be monitored for evidence of beneficial social interaction between students and reinforced.

Summative: There is an individual grade predicated upon individual and team output for the presentations and questions generated.
